Fashion || CULTURE CLASH: Tina Kalivas "TOTEM" 2010

Fashion || CULTURE CLASH: Tina Kalivas "TOTEM" 2010

We are living for the Native American inspired print Tina Kalivas chose as her stand-out look for this collection. It is absolutely gorgeous and falls right in line with the theme/name of her collection; "TOTEM."
Totems originated from Algonquian's during the 1700s .

Totem: o·tem [toh-tuhm] –noun
1. a natural object or an animate being, as an animal or bird, assumed as the emblem of a clan, family, or group; 2. an object or natural phenomenon with which a family or sib considers itself closely related; 3. a representation of such an object serving as the distinctive mark of the clan or group. 4. anything serving as a distinctive, often venerated, emblem or symbol.

According to the Australian-Greek new source NeoKosmos.com "Tina Kalivas Greek-Australian fashion designer who launched her label at Australian Fashion Week in 2002." Adding that, "many of her designs favour draping and colourful, vivid detailing, and she has gained popularity through the originality of her panelling, seams and her shaped tailoring that creates a natural and yet structured silhouette." Her work is already building popular momentum amongst the fashion industry as her collections have been featured in VOGUE Australia, British VOGUE, VOGUE Italia, along with notable runway shows.

Fashion || ESSENCE Magazine: Fabulous S/S 2010 Covers Amidst Fashion Director Controversy

By way of viral articles on the issue, Clutch Magazine was the first source that broke the news to me earlier this week regarding ESSENCE Magazine's new hire --a White Fashion Director for it's lifestyle magazine which has been largely supported and subscribed to by African-American women for over 40 years. An issue that brought heartfelt disappointment to former ESSENCE Magazine Fashion Director, Michaela Angela Davis (@MADvision):

"it is with a heavy heavy heart I have learned that Essence Magazine has engaged a white fashion director, this hurts, literally, spiritually" -MADvision (2:39 PM Jul 23rd via web).

Clutch Magazine reports: "The company has yet to officially announce the new hire. However, media industry site Media Bistro released an article on Monday revealing the pick is Ellianna Placas, formerly of O: The Oprah Magazine and US Weekly. The report confirms Placas will make her official debut with Essence in their 40th anniversary commemorative issue in September. According to the brand’s announcement, the Fashion Director is responsible for developing and conceiving five to seven fashion stories and one feature per month. The position also requires the person to communicate the 'Essence style mission on sales calls and represent the brand on television' among other managerial tasks."

This issue has brought the bigger picture to light; there is a lack of African American female executives/directors in the fashion industry. It should ALSO be a call-to-action to former editors of ESSENCE, that understand the anatomy of this mag, to start new publications. Thus creating new and additional opportunities.

Fashion || Designer on the Rise: Boxing Kitten

Fashion || Designer on the Rise: Boxing Kitten

We are thrilled to share a post regarding our high anticipation of Boxing Kitten's Fall 2010 Collection
African-inspired and printed westernized dress has paved a growing influence on spring and resort lines since the early 2000s.
with so many more options in this area of specialty
(women's contemporary designs inspired by batik and west african fabrics) Boxing Kitten is undoubtedly
a front runner within this design aesthetic.
Designer Maya A. Lake grasped the growing interest in vintage patterns and combined it with an equally
maturing affinity for African prints (sometimes referred to as "ethnic prints;" we prefer the former).
Their Resort 2010 collection provided a more than impressive display of color and print selection
adapted by sleeveless dresses, jackets, skirts, shorts and pants; looks that have been
worn and well-supported by natural beauties including Solange Knowles and Erykah Badu.
Printed shoes are also available this season.
We are expecting major distribution deals in the future for this brand. Not only has she
solidified her niche, Lake has nearly perfected it and locked-in large numbers of the African print and vintage-inspired market.

Fashion || Elie Saab SPR 2010

Fashion || Elie Saab SPR 2010

Lebanese designer, Elie Saab, is known to bring glamour to red carpets by dressing Hollywood's premiere A-list celebrities.
He is a namesake during award season, but his ability to elegantly contour a woman's body with drapes and pleats
is almost beyond compare for more contemporary names in high-end fashion.
While, gowns are his claim to fame, I truly appreciated a section of his collection that
utilized a light weight floral print in combination with black organza.
Beautifully executed. Love the shoes!
